Can Someone Please Tag….

December 11, 2016 0 By Bethanie

Yet again our Facebook timelines are being filled with ridiculously insulting and degrading photographs of people who don’t “fit in” with societies norms, all in the name of what? Apparently, as per the usual excuse, it is yet again, “humour” however yet again, I find myself not finding this new trend at all funny, since when did it become funny to degrade other human beings.

Kanye literally sums up my facial expression when I see these posts.

Lets just get this one out of the way first, as it’s the most screamingly obvious, everybody is different, every single human on this planet is different! We all look different, sound different, have different interests, and find different things/people attractive. So, bearing that in mind, why are we now taking to shaming people just because they aren’t what you personally find attractive?! If you don’t like what you’re looking at, be a grown up about it and scroll past it! Don’t spread and encourage hatred by commenting on it or sharing it, just ignore it, if we all did that, then the trend would soon die down, because nobody would be interacting with it.

What part of your mind makes you honestly believe that spreading such hate and negativity is deemed as “funny”,  shaming a person based on their appearance is never funny, lets do a little role reversal here, how would you feel if that were your photograph being shared around the internet, with everyone laughing at you and mocking you based on your physical appearance, my bet is that you’d be pretty damn upset about it, so lets take that into consideration, if you wouldn’t like it happening to you, how do you think these people feel being humiliated on the internet for no good reason other than other peoples selfish amusement.

We live in a civilised society, we’ve all been taught that bullying is not okay throughout our entire lives, and this is exactly what this trend is, widespread bullying, you wouldn’t walk up to someone in the street and criticise them for their physical appearance, so why is it that doing it on the internet suddenly becomes deemed as socially acceptable? This isn’t a rhetorical question people, I genuinely want to know why something that is socially unacceptable in the street, is suddenly seen as social acceptable on the internet.

Hate culture is dangerous, it gives rise to those who want to spread hate on a wider level; I’m looking at you Donald Trump. However, negative comments about people based on their appearance (such as Rosie O’Donnell), from people in high places, regardless of whether it existed before they started saying it, also gives rise to trends like this, Donald Trump is now 38 days away from becoming the President of the United States, one of the most powerful positions in the world, so if your average Joe (or Joanna) Bloggs on the internet sees hateful comments being spread by someone as influential as that, then they start to believe that it’s okay for them to be making comments and judgements on people based on their appearance. If we carry on in this cycle, we will just end up with a culture of intolerance and all you need to do is pick up a history book to see how well that has worked out for us in the past.

So please people, the next time you see a “Can someone please tag” image, just scroll past it, don’t give in or give rise to the hatred and intolerance that it represents, we’re all better than that!
